Report from Popayan, Colombia by Louise James.

A demo in Popayan, Colombia (population 200,000).
Tuesday, April 30, 2002.

Just got back from the protest and it was fantastic! The group was probably of about 40 people but the energy in the protest was sky high.

We marched arond the centre of town, and then etablished ourselves in a little square outside a big university. We sang and for a change the sound was good, the people listened, and it felt brilliant. The only bad thing was the sun on our faces but at the time we barely noticed. we talked over the mic to a big audience about Palestine, about what Mary is doing, and I kept saying that 'El pueblo Colombiano deberia mostrar mas solidaridad con otros paises que tambien sufren la violencia' Colombia should show more solidarity with other countries that are also suffering violence

We sang my song dedicated to the murderers and half way through changed 'El sol brillar sobre Colombia, to Palestina. The sun will shine once again over Palestine. And then I said ,I dedicated it to Sharon, Bush, and everyone who supported the massacres in Palestine.

We had ten big flags of Palestine, loads of banners, some saying:

USA STOP SUPPORTING MASACRES IN PALESTINE.

JENIN COLOMBIA ESTA CONTIGO JENIN, COLOMBIA IS WITH YOU

SOLIDARIOS CON PALESTINA SOLIDARITY WITH PALESTINE

PALESTINA LIBRE FREE PALESTINE

SHARON Y BUSH TERRORISTAS

ISRAEL STOP (THIS IS PAINTED WITH THE S IN ISRAEL DRAWN AS A SWASTIKA)

ETC....

As we marched we chanted: 'No maten mas a mis hermanos queremos paz entre todos los humanos rhymes in spanish: Stop killing my brothers and sisters; we want peace amounst all humans'

'Sharon facista usted es el terrorista Rhymes in spanish: Sharon fascist - you're the terrorist.'

'Jenin amigo el world esta contigo Jenin my friend, the world is with you.'

'Fuera imperialismo de Colombia y el mundo: fuera! fuera! fuera! Imperialism out of Colombia and all the world: out out out.'

'Viva la revolution Palestrin: viva! viva! viva! Long live the Palestinian revolution'.

I felt it was strong and powerful, full of young, rebellious energy, and guys with such strong voices they nearly blew my eardrums when they shouted, but it wasn't aggresive in any way just strong and to the point.

The media was all there; radio, TV and news papers from Popayan and national like Caracol and RCN. I talked for lots of them.

Andy did his unicicle act and a juggling show which was good because it attracted lots of people and then we got them to sign our petition. He had the audience shouting 'Viva Palestina!' and things like that.

Three people did a little theatre sketch about what is going on. And generally it couldn't have been better. Then we left we left posters stuck on the walls, but kept the best ones for the next time. We were told afterwards that we were the "Motor" of the protest and we will always be asked to join things like that.

Up with the revolution.

Love louise
